Heart Jewels are the physical manifestation of the soul. A heart-shaped mineral that contains a person's consciousness. All beings have one, but Glimmerians typically have theirs on the outside of their bodies, placed somewhere on their clothing. Human souls, however, are contained inside their bodies and only take Heart Jewel form when forcefully extracted in some manner. The glow and shine of a Heart Jewel indicates the owner's health.

Heart Jewel Corruption

When a Heart Jewel becomes corrupted, it darkens and clouds over, losing it's glow as the soul becomes too weak to maintain a stable hold on it's host body. Once a Heart Jewel becomes completely clouded over, it shatters and the soul is said to move on to the afterlife.

Extracting a Heart Jewel

A sufficiently skilled magician can separate a Heart Jewel from a host body by force, however, without careful attention, the trauma created by the extraction can cause the Heart Jewel to shatter instantly. It's unheard of for someone to remove their own Heart Jewel without dying. The Nightmare Agency has developed a method of "safely" removing corrupt Heart Jewels from their victims without shattering it in order to attach a Nightmare Crystal to it.
